Subject: SharePoint is a real Document Management System
Hello,

I'm now evaluating Sharepoint... .

I know two organizations that changed from Documentum to Sharepoint.

My question: Is Sharepoint a real Document Management System like Documentum
or Cyco Automanager Meridian or a collaborative portal/platform ?

Thanks
DS

The current version isn't really as feature rich as a Documentum. It
only offers basic features like check-in, check-out, versioning. It does
however offer features that some others don't like tight MS Office
integration.

From what has been publically communicated on the next version, there
are some new features around workflow and content management but nothing
that's available today.

Depends on what your needs are and how you define a "real" document
management system. DM means a lot of things to a lot of people.

I would say, that it depends on what version and installation you have:

When installing a Windows 2003 server with the module for Windows Sharepoint
Services, then you don't have much of the added possibilities perhaps. But
when also using Sharepoint Portal Server, the impact it has on your
repository usage is big.

We hare currently waiting for version 2005, as it has about the full
possibilities of Visual SourceSafe. But it is true that there are basic
features (out of the box) when looking at check-in/check-out functionality,
BUT because of the integration with ALL MS Office products (2003 versions
anyway), it is easy to create extended functionality by use of VBA.

Versioning is extensive in Sharepoint 2003 though.

Mark.

DS, how far have you got with Sharepoint now as a document management system?
I am now at the same point as you were in 2006
