I am trying to check out a file from a document library. When I attempt to
check out the file I get the following error:

The URL 'Spreadsheets/acct Spreadsheets/Quarterly.xls' is invalid.  It may
refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder
that is not in the current Web.

I can download the file and edit the file.  The version history is still
there.  What do I do to troubleshoot and repair the problem?

What Version?
Does explorer view work in your library?
