A few of us (myself, Mike Bailey, Ryan Allen, and Nick Marfleet) got
together at SCT on Monday night, to plan another Ruby Nuby Night. We
bounced around some ideas, and started making a list of topics worth
including.

As we were doing it, we realised something: we're not nearly as
excited as we were 18 months ago (when the last Nuby Night was held)

The link below is for May 2008,
which isn't really very useful.
There's also OSDC ([link]) the open source
developer's conference - but again, it had very little ruby in last
year's schedule, it was mostly Perl and Python with a bit of Groovy

 Hi Nuwan
Plenty of people are using Rails here - definitely seems to be growing
- it's being used in all manner of projects (e-commerce, SMS,
searching, hotel booking systems, online communities, etc). I think a
lot of people are using Rspec too - I am, at least.
I know there's at least a few people looking for good rails developers.

Sounds like a fairly standard content management system with a workflow for
approval.
Surely there'd be thousands of open source or commercial systems that would
do what you want out of the box.
I agree with everyone else's comments about the infeasibility of building
from scratch what you've described within your stated budget.

With respect I am not sure your budget is enough for a full custom app.
Basecamp could provide enough features, and far cheaper.
Steven
/***************************** *******************/
Steven Holloway
Programmer, Web Developer, IT Consultant
Composer, Producer, Performer, DJ
p. 0437 541 276
e. impur...@gmail.com

The
initial specs will eat at that immensely. If they test it might be a
little lower. ;)

I'd recommend using something that already exists or getting some real
