Subject: ruby at nabCapital
Howdy folks,

I'm currently filling a role as the Development Manager in the Data
Warehouse Group at nabCapital.  It's a fancy name for what is
essentially an agile coaching position.  I've been busily ramping up
the development team of recent, as we're embarking on a reasonably
long programme of work.

Development in the the group is largely made of of ETL jobs built
using specialist commercial tools.  Imagine slurping up data from a
source like a flat file or a database, then massaging it in some way
and spitting it out into another database and you're pretty much
there.  We have dozens and dozens of these things.

We've just recently starting trying to ramp up the level of automated
testing around these jobs.  It takes a long time to make sure they're
running right, and we want to improve our quality too.  A scripting
language like Ruby seemed perfect for the job, so we've dipped our toe
in the water and are pretty happy so far.  Mike Williams has been
charged with getting us up and running in this space.

It's interesting to me to hear stories about big corporates taking up
usage of Ruby in some fashion, so I wanted to let the group know about
it.  I'll wander along to one of the melbourne ruby meetings sometime
soon and talk more about it.  However, I'm also looking for more
people, so this is a job ad to some extent as well.

As the development team ramps up, so too do we want to ramp up the
testing team.  We're looking for more people with Ruby skills and an
interest in testing to help out.  There's lots of DB and text file
interaction in various formats - flat file, XML, CSV etc.  I'd
ultimately like rspec tests for all of our ETL jobs running in a
continuous integration server.

If anyone thinks they might be interested, please contact me off list.

Cheers,

Marty Andrews
