Subject: Foot controller help?
Hi,

This isn't so much related to the Mandala pad itself but I thought
someone might be able to answer this (fairly) simple question with
regards to electronic drumming with the Mandalas and foot controllers.

Basically, I'm using the Mandala pads with Battery 3 but I'd also love
to incorporate my Roland FD-8 foot controller (along with the
Mandalas) as part of my Battery setup (instead of also using an
external brain). If I were to use a TRS to USB cable (ie.
http://musical-instruments.pricegrabber.co.uk/signal-processors/TBone...)
and plug one end into my USB hub and the other into my foot
controller, would that work? Would Battery be able to recognize the
foot controller as just another MIDI instrument (like the Mandalas)?
Or would the signal sent through the USB be something other than MIDI
data?

Thanks in advance,
Nick.

Pretty sure that cable won't do it.  Looks like it is for recording
guitar or synth, or any audio really, but not for triggering a sample.

Nick,

I am confident many of the Mandala Drum player-owners who post to this
group possess more knowledge and insight than myself regarding your
question on integrating your Roland FD-8 pedal with Battery 3 and your
Mandala Drum(s).

Please excuse any stuff included below which may be listed under the
headings:

        1) "obvious - I know this/that already"
        2) "someone else posted that stuff here already, and they did a
better job, too"
        3) "options which require additional monetary expense are neither
useful, or helpful"

Perhaps the following detail may be useful in finding a satisfactory
solution?

A possible "Short Version"

The Roland FD-8 trigger-pedal does not have built-in MIDI capability
as found in the Mandala Drum.

In order to incorporate a Roland FD-8 pedal (while foregoing the use
of an "external brain") with a Mandala Drum(s) and Battery 3 as drum
sound source/sampler, I believe the use of a Trigger MIDI converter
may be a possible step toward the solution you seek, if not a
requirement.

After referring to the Mandala Drum User Manual, Appendix B for MIDI
channel and note assignment settings, perhaps we have the following:

MIDI enabled Mandala Drum + USB cable + computer + Battery 3 =
Beautiful Sound!

and

        Roland FD-8 + TRS cable + Trigger MIDI converter + USB-MIDI cable +
computer + Battery 3 = Beautiful Sound!

A possible "Longer Version"

Following detail excerpted from V-Drum Catalog Information for Roland
Trigger MIDI Converter TMC-6:

"The TMC-6 Trigger MIDI Converter makes it easy to play and trigger
MIDI modules and samplers..."

"This affordable device uses accurate and reliable V-Drums triggering
technology, allowing acoustic drummers to “play” electronic sounds
from their favorite MIDI module..."

"The TMC-6 includes six trigger inputs compatible with all Roland
drum pads or acoustic drum triggers (an FD-8 Hi-Hat Control Pedal can
also be connected)."

Following detail excerpted from Owners Manual for Roland Trigger MIDI
Converter TMC-6:

"Connect optional pads, drum triggers, foot switches, or other such
devices."

"TRIG 6/HH CTRL:  You can connect the pad types listed above, or
connect a hi-hat control pedal. By connecting a hi-hat control pedal,
you can switch open and close of the pad connected to TRIG 5, or
control the MIDI messages like Control Change or Aftertouch (p.
25)..."

"...turning on the power with a hi-hat control pedal connected and
the TRIG 6/HH CTRL switch set to HH CTRL automatically enables the
TMC-6 to use the hi-hat control pedal."

Following detail from internet search results for "MIDI to USB
adapter"

Alesis AudioLink USB-MIDI Cable
MIDI to USB Cable Interface with Built-in 6' Cable - Mac/PC

Makes MIDI Connection Problems a Thing of the Past!
Here's a handy one. The USB-MIDI Cable is the missing link between
your MIDI instruments and your Mac or PC computer. On one side there's
a MIDI connector, on the other side USB. Now you can effortlessly
connect your keyboards, drum machines, effects units, or any other
MIDI gear you've got — right to your computer, with no bulky MIDI
interface necessary. You can even plug the USB-MIDI Cable into your
existing USB hub. And with a 6-foot length, you'll have all the cable
you need with the Alesis USB-MIDI Cable.

Alesis USB-MIDI Cable Features:
Turns any device with MIDI output into a USB-MIDI controller
Plug-and-play, class-compliant USB for Mac and PC
6-foot length (1.8 meter)
Compatible with most Mac and Windows class-compliant drivers and
software

Alesis USB-MIDI Cable System Requirements:
Mac: OS 9 or higher
PC: Windows XP or Vista
Available USB port

Following detail excerpted from: Native Instruments Battery 3 Owners
Manual

        "MIDI Setup

If you have a MIDI device installed (USB is most common for MIDI
these days), here is the setup for that. Upon starting Battery for the
first time, your MIDI device will be off. To begin using it, you need
to turn the input on. If you can’t see any device listed in the
window, then this means BATTERY has not detected your MIDI device.
Please make sure that it is turned on and plugged in to a free MIDI or
USB port. It could also mean that the device driver is not correctly
installed. Please see your MIDI device’s documentation for further
information."
