Congratualtions to the girls on an awsome first season. The girls have been one of the fittest teams all season, often dominating field position even on the top teams.
Our best performances all season have been against the undefeated 2006 premiers , the hornets. In our first game ever we only went down 2-0, in our second game mid season we held them out for 45 minutes then went down 1-0. Whilst in the last round we got the first goal, held them out till the final minutes of a rediculously overtime first half. Then we dominated them with field position but unfortunately went down 3-2.
The girls have a lot to be proud of as they have shown supreme fitness all season, they have dominated field position and once we improve our shooting accuracey we will be a true contender for the leader board.
Barramunids won their first round in the finals, defeating Crescent Head 2-0 with both goals scored by the brillian Emma Perks. Our supurb defence once again kept our opponents scoreless. Sally Coates and Claire O'Sillivan have done a great job in goals recently with Cassie King out on the field with an injured finger.
In the second final we (6th place) played Wauchope Eucalypts (3rd place) and scored two awsome goals early in the first half. Emmae Perks and Elodie O'Sullivan got a goal each. The girls then clung on in the second half against a strong opposition to come out with a 2-1 victory.
In the third final we played the minor premiers Camden Haven who finished the season well ahead of all other teams. Camden Haven had finished the rounds with a +42 on goals for and against and we had finished with -12, which highlights the formidable task we had to achieve. We had played Camden Haven twice during the season going down 4-0 and 3-0. It was very wet with huge puddles on the field that caught the players out on many occasions. Saints had two very strong players and two of our leading goal scorers sidelined with illness and a broken jaw (from softball - not soccer).
We psyched up for a huge effort and Saints scored about ten minutes into the game with a terrific high speed break from Claire O'Sullivan down the left flank then in and finishing the job. We then dominated field position and held them out till about halfway through the second half when Camnden Haven put an unstopable high shot that hit the under side of the cross bar and deflected in above the goalie. The game went into golden point extra time and Camden Haven came out firing, our girls lifted and responded, but in the dying moments of extra time Camden Haven were awarded a dot shot which was nicely placed wide right avoiding the keeper and winning he game.
I had told the girls for the last few games and tonight on four occasssions that irrespective of the result we had a terrific first season that has far exceeded everyones expectations. We have finished equal third and given our dominance over the premiers and likely competition winners it is a loss to be very proud of indeed.
A huge thankyou to Ken and Kim Tassell from LJ Hooker SWR that came on board with very short notice to sponsor the girls uniforms.
In 2008 several of the girls are 16 and must go up to under 17's, however some girls want to or are too young to go up and they will stay in U 15's. Approx 7 must go up and 8 will stay in the under 15's. At present the numbers for the under 17 team look great. The under 15's team is growing in size and would currently be about 13 players. We will be wanting 15 - 17 players in each team.
