The first school house (vested/State) for mixed classes began 4 March 1861 in the former Foresters' Hall, adjoining the Lamb Inn (now the site of the "RG" Royal George hotel, cnr Brunswick and Ann Streets, Fortitude Valley Opened in 1867 as the second school for mixed classes in Brookes Street, Fortitude Valley. Later this school building was for girls and infants, and later still girls only until its closure at the end of 1949. Behind this building also stood another structure which housed the pupil overflow during times of overcrowding. The Fortitude Valley Opportunity School occupied the building at rear from 1951 until it was relocated to the former Breakfast Creek State School building and renamed Newstead Special School The former Girls' school later became home of the SES for many years before being bought by a firm of architects. (Source The Courier-Mail, Brisbane, Friday, June 9, 2000) Initially built as the Boys' school from 1874-c188?, then infants until 1951. It stands west of the Valley Police Station in Brookes Street. It ceased to operate as a school in 1951 when the infants were transferred to the new school building further up Brookes Street. For many years it was an adjunct to the Police Station until it was sold to a firm of architects who have preserved and maintained it in keeping with its heritage value The Boys' school, across the railway line in Brookes Street, Fortitude Valley was demolished c1948/9 and replaced by a new brick and cement render school which opened in January 1950. At the time of demolition timber was in very short supply and the Chermside State School benefited with repairs being carried out using timber salvaged from the former Valley Boys' school The new school built on the site of the former Boy's school to celebrate Fortitude Valley's Centenary in 1949. The new school opened in January 1950 with mixed classes, the infants joining the school in 1951
