Newstead House, Brekky Creek
|
| |
Don`t know if members need this, but Valleyites like to claim notable
people in our area.:-]
Captain John Clements Wickham, resident in Newstead House for a number
of years, was the second in command of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle
(1831-1836), famous for the world-circling expedition of Charles... more »

The First School
|
| |
While we may claim to having the first public school in the Valley,
the honour really goes to Fanny Trundle. Arriving on the 'Fortitude'
in 1849, Charles and Fanny Trundle rented an acre of land from Mr.
Duncan, Collector of Customs, who owned acreage bounded by Gotha, Ann,
Gipps and Leichhardt (now St. Paul`s Tce.) Streets. He erected a bush... more »

My Valley School Days
|
| |
I have finally found the time to put down a short account of my days
living in the Valley. More later perhaps if I think of some
interesting events, etc. (eg. life in the "Army Camp").
In 1946, my parents and my brother, Don (older by three years) and I
moved from Toowoomba, where Dad had been stationed in the army, to... more »

Ekka to be redeveloped
|
| |
The surrounds of the Ekka grounds are to be redeveloped to house
10,000 residents. Since I believe only two classes are operating at
the FV school possibly leading to a closure,, this might be the
infusion to give the school a new lease of life.

Another Valley Boy makes history
|
| |
C.E.Chuter was a pupil at the Fortitude Valley State School, probably
around the beginning of the last century. When the push came for an
amalgamation of all the separate suburban councils into a Greater
Brisbane City Council in 1925, our lad had so much input as Chief
Clerk of the Home Secretary, that it became known as 'Chuter`s Bill'.... more »

in the very heart of Fortitude Valley, close to the new

`nother snippet from the past

A snippet from Major-General Spencer Brown covering the period
1877-1925.
‘Early German Station (later Nundah)
Mr. Christopher Hurworth, who in my time, was head of the Fortitude
Valley School, was trained in England to the teaching profession and
came to Australia in 1874. His first appointment here was German... more »

Brookes Street
|
| |
A follow-up of sorts from Ray`s par of 14th January:
'Just to add something else of interest: Fortitude Valley was also
called Bells Vale or Bells Valley. Early maps show the "road" from
Brisbane Town in the direction of Bells Vale.
Ray '
From a 1885 map of the area, it appears Brookes Street used to be Bell... more »

The Valley--Early Days
|

No date—no author---unknown publication
‘And the Valley, what was it like in those times?’ he was asked.
From the veranda of the house in Ivory Street, the cheerful old
gentleman gazed over the busy Valley spread out before him, its
immense drapery houses in the foreground, and the industrial factories... more »
