A follow-up of sorts from Ray`s par of 14th January:

'Just to add something else of interest: Fortitude Valley was also
called Bells Vale or Bells Valley. Early maps show the "road" from
Brisbane Town in the direction of Bells Vale.

From a 1885 map of the area, it appears Brookes Street used to be Bell
Street. Is it connected to Bells Vale?
