Ekka to be redeveloped

The surrounds of the Ekka grounds are to be redeveloped to house
10,000 residents. Since I believe only two classes are operating at
the FV school possibly leading to a closure,, this might be the
infusion to give the school a new lease of life.

C.E.Chuter was a pupil at the Fortitude Valley State School, probably
around the beginning of the last century. When the push came for an
amalgamation of all the separate suburban councils into a Greater
Brisbane City Council in 1925, our lad had so much input as Chief
Clerk of the Home Secretary, that it became known as 'Chuter`s Bill'.

Is it possible that Sagittarians' were destined to get involved in physical activities? such as boxing and Judokai. There were two other "Violet"s associated with the Crouch family. These were "Violet" and "Violet II" both of which were 14 foot racing skiffs sailed by Charlie Crouch. Charlie was my grandfather's brother, who in the 1890s as a teenager was acknowledged the champion punt skipper of the Brisbane River. When he became a fisherman in Moreton Bay, his skippering and seamanship qualities continued to improve. I have a copy of a newspaper clipping which says in part 'From the time of her launching in 1898, in 69 starts, the "Violet" scored 38 firsts, 16 seconds, and 5 thirds. She was also champion (I don't know whether club or State), 1898,99,1900,01,03. There is a story that she was a mile in front in the 1902 championship when her mast broke.' In 1905/6/7, skippering "Violet II" Charlie won the Australasian Championships. "Violet II" was owned by Harry Chapman of the rag trade in Brisbane.

The revelations of our diligent F.V.S.S .researchers that the original Fortitude Valley School site in 1861 where the Royal George Hotel is now situated bought back some memories; I used to sell papers after school in the Valley outside Borthwick’s butcher shop which was on the corner of Ann St. and Brunswick St diagonally opposite the same Royal George Hotel.

Have just come across an article in The Courier (Brisbane) of Tuesday,
17 September 1861 in which a reference is made to the "Village of
Ashby", a suburb of Brisbane. It turns out that "Ashby" was another
name for Fortitude Valley. I thought I'd share this with you in case

their spouses here at the dinner table. Our third child and her
husband could not make it as they spent Christmas Day in Helsinki,

know of at Bowen Hills was run by Jim Jamieson. Anyone know of the
