Captain John Clements Wickham, resident in Newstead House for a number
of years, was the second in command of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle

Another claim to fame for the Trundle family. Their daughter Annie
married Theophilus Pugh, founder of Pugh`s Almanac, published for a
number of years, and a favourite for researching early Queensland
history.

While we may claim to having the first public school in the Valley,
the honour really goes to Fanny Trundle. Arriving on the 'Fortitude'
in 1849, Charles and Fanny Trundle rented an acre of land from Mr.
Duncan, Collector of Customs, who owned acreage bounded by Gotha, Ann,
Gipps and Leichhardt (now St. Paul`s Tce.) Streets. He erected a bush

Now you are taxing the grey matter! I have acquired one year's Hobbies
Illustrated but I'd forgotten about the Hobbies Junior.
The "Adventure" featured outdoors stuff- fishing, etc.- didn't it?

Ross, maybe the glasses were an excuse. Main reason was my art calling.
Great to learn of those details. I managed to buy a copy of Hotspur,
Champion and Wizard on eBay
a couple of years ago.
I did not know the Watts travelled from Chermside for all that time. Wow!

I waited for other replies, Ken, but looks like folks have gone
walkabout. Lots of happy memories there. Dunno why you quit hockey
with glasses. Frankie Watts, our dynamic centre-half at Valleys,
played with coke-bottle glasses all his career. We used to tease him
on rainy day matches about fitting windscreen wipers.

Ekka to be redeveloped

The surrounds of the Ekka grounds are to be redeveloped to house
10,000 residents. Since I believe only two classes are operating at
the FV school possibly leading to a closure,, this might be the
infusion to give the school a new lease of life.

Another Valley Boy makes history

C.E.Chuter was a pupil at the Fortitude Valley State School, probably
around the beginning of the last century. When the push came for an
amalgamation of all the separate suburban councils into a Greater
Brisbane City Council in 1925, our lad had so much input as Chief
Clerk of the Home Secretary, that it became known as 'Chuter`s Bill'.

Nope, Windmell`s Hotel, the 'Stranger`s Home', appears to be on the
corner of New Farm Rd. and Queens St., Fortitude Valley. He was
selling it in 1854 after running it for three years. (aka Ann and
Brunswick Sts.)

Hi, Terry, you may have cracked the code here with the info about
McLachlan St. being Windmell. Charles Windmell kept the only hotel in
the Valley in the 1850s. His address was also given as Rosebank
Cottage, next to the New Bridge, Fortitude Valley. So, along with
Ray`s clue about Bridge Street, we may have a solution. At least till
