You may have seen the Future Melbourne online collaboration wiki-based
project being run by the City of Melbourne local government - I
stumbled upon it via Laurel's blog post today, and I've also posted
about it on The RiotACT quickly and will shortly in more detail on my
own blog as well as Free Canberra Wireless.

For the active Free Australia Wireless members in Melbourne, I would
strongly encourage you to get involved in this project, particularly
the discussions on "Pathway 4.4 – Make Melbourne a wired city":

http://www.futuremelbourne.com.au/wiki/view/FMPlan/PlanS4Goal4Directi...

... and promote Free Australia Wireless as an enabler of this outcome,
for the creation of public wifi hotspots - or rather in our case, the
slightly more ambitious creation of city-wide mesh networks.

If no one from Melbourne wants to take this on then I will - though I
may be frowned on for participating in discussions on the future of
Melbourne when I live in Canberra - but anyway, this is a good
opportunity.

And for Sydney, until May 30, people can submit comments for
Sustainable Sydney 2030. I had a look at the draft document at Customs
House, and free wireless internet was just mentioned in one single
paragraph (free wifi internet at the libraries) while I think it would
cover a lot more (tourism, business, cultural centres,...) I'm
planning on submitting something in regard to
FreeAustraliaWireless/FreeSydneyWireless, probably a reworked Free
Australia Wireless executive overview. I'd appreciate any feedback on
this too, anything you would want to see added?

As of 30 minutes ago, having wrapped up the last of my BarCampCanberra
2008 responsibilities that have taken up a bit of my time over the
last 4 weeks, I'm back into FAW so yes will re-read the exec summary
and send any thoughts!

Hi NathanaelB,

Thanks for your post about our Future Melbourne wiki, which we've
grown to refer to as "the city plan that anyone can edit!".

Our public consultation period began on 17 May and will run until 14
June. During this time we encourage everybody to visit the site and
register to take part in discussions and to help us edit and refine
the plan. This might be as simple as fixing our spelling mistakes ;)
or as involved as drafting new Outcomes.

We've recently redesigned the wiki with a new look and feel.
Unfortunately, this means this link above no longer works. For those
wanting to view the Wired City Pathway, you can do so via the
following link: http://www.futuremelbourne.com.au/wiki/view/FMPlan/S2G4P4WiredCity

We look forward to your input. If you have any questions you can reach
us at futuremelbourneadmin AT melbourne.vic.gov.au

Thanks!
Dale
