One of the most common questions that we get asked is about being
found by Google and Search Engine Optimisation or SEO. The good thing
about the various search engines is that they operate by a set of
rules. It is generally agreed that Google is the most important search
engine and if you rank well on Google in the first 30 or so results it
will improve your sales.
Google and most of the search engines rank search results based on
relevance and quality. There is a great deal of information on how
Google works on the web so I am not going to repeat all that stuff.
With a website built in ePages from eCorner there are a few simple
things that you need to do to improve your search results:
Make sure that you site is ready before you submit it to the search
engines. If it is not complete the search engine crawlers may ignore
your site. By complete we mean that there are no invalid pages, all
the links work, you have content complete on the home page, you have
added all the keywords, you have added a title.
Get someone to review your site before you commit it to the search
engines.
Make sure you have content in all the description areas in each
category and on the home page.
Make sure you have added keywords (seperated by commas) to the
"Keyword" field in each category and product.
When you are in the Category Manage at the highest level the
Descriptions and Keywords that you enter there will be those that are
used for your sites home page. ePages will automatically convert these
to Meta tags.
In the Settings Manager - General tab the Shop Name and Slogan will
automatically be used to create the Title for your site home page.
Shop Name is in the beginning of the Title for every page. So make
sure that Shop Name and Slogan are relevent to what the shop does and
reflect your most important keywords. So for example your shop might
be www.coolblues.com.au and you might sell blues music. So the Shop
Name could be:
"Blues Music Online"
and the Slogan might be:
"Digital Music | Australian Composers | Latest Blues Hits"
This will show in the Title Bar as "Blues Music Online - Digital Music
| Australian Composers | Latest Blues Hits"
The content on the pages of your website has to be relevent to what
you sell and to the keywords that you expect visitors to use to find
you site. So Title, Description, Content and Keywords all have to be
consistent.
You will need to submit your website to as many search engines and
directories as you can but one submit once as some search engines will
ban sites that submit multiple times in a short period. There are
products and services on the web that will do this for you but it is
not difficult and is covered in an FAQ on the eCorner Stores Plus
website.
Take note --- IT MAY TAKE 6 WEEKS FOR GOOGLE TO CRAWL YOUR SITE FOR
THE FIRST TIME.
Your sites ranking will improve as you get more visitors and you link
to more websites and they link back to you.
You can test to see if Google can find your website at the following

There is lots of good information relative to Google at www.google.com.au/webmasters.
I hope some of these tips help you but remember that it is important
that the content on your site is relevent, that you have content and
keywords for EVERY page and specially the Home Page and that you have
a complementary Shop Name and Slogan.
