When I first played Resident Evil it was in an arcade over a decade ago and the point was to ... well ... shoot the zombies.
I am now playing my first PC version of the game (Resident Evil 5) and I tried the same approach and I run out of ammo almost immediately. Am I not supposed to shoot the zombies? I seem to have a blade I can slash them with so should I conserve ammo and go on a chopping frenzy?
It is early in the game so I assume I can find more ammo or better guns later.
Another question, in the game set-up it asks for difficulty and also asks if I want my partner to react to my attacks. What does this mean? If I say yes, does that mean she won't shoot at what I do? If I say no, does that mean we might both target the same zombie?

The RE games have always been about having low ammo and trying to use what you have. It's not like a normal FPS where you get 400 bullets for your super high power rifle in the first 5 min of game play. Read the manual. It gives a lot of useful tips about how to take down the baddies. The way I do it is I shoot them in the legs, which causes them to lean down, then I get as close as I can and I get a prompt to hit them using a KB key. This works great when you're first starting the game and haven't upgraded your weapons yet. I have upgraded my shotgun to the point where one shot will knock the SOB's back about 5 feet and kill them. As far as your great looking, very handy partner, she has two commands, Attack or Cover. Pretty simple. To switch in game all you have to do in use the arrow keys. She's the best AI Buddie I've ever had in a game. She will hand you the right ammo for the guns you're carrying when she finds it, she will find stuff you don't see (which is very handy) and she'll heal you if she has healing spray, herbs in her inventory. I have her carry the healing stuff so when I'm in trouble I don't have to try and heal myself. This works very well when I get over run, which happens a lot in the game. RE5 is one of the best games I've played in years. I really have to think about what I'm doing, and the game looks fantastic, and is a lot of fun to play. There's lots of things to find, which I enjoy.

The only real problem I had with the AI teammate is that she pissed away ammo like it was American beer. I'd give her 100 rounds of pistol ammo, and one or two encounters later it was gone. Unfortunately, the alternative was tedious micromanaging; supply her with only a clip of ammo, then run over to her whenever she ran dry (she was also profligate with healing supplies).
But as a friendly combatant, it was nice to have an ally who didn't need incessant babysitting and/or rescue every thirty seconds. She wasn't exceptionally proficient in combat (as evidenced by her blowing through a case of ammo against only a few zombies) but she did provide helpful cover-fire and was otherwise not a hinderance.
IIRC, "attack reaction" means "friendly fire on"; e.g., if you accidentally shoot her with this on, her health goes down.
I did peek when installing and it seemed to be basic install instructions and button assignments but last night I took another look and see they do indeed have a whole section of tips and combo instructions. Oops. Thanks!

It sure looks and plays well so far. Thanks for the reply and suggestions.

That's not good. Okay, thanks for the warning.

And she's very, very attractive.

Okay ... that makes sense. I try to avoid shooting my partners so this never occurred to me.

This is on my list of games to play.
I have played the RE games on both the Gamecube and the Wii and I really do like them. This looks like the first PC iteration that is actually going to be worth playing. -- Rob

If you liked RE4 on the GC then you're going to fall out of your chair when you start playing RE5! This is one great game! JLC
