This looks like a very interesting mod. It's described as a total
conversion of Unreal Tournament 2004. Out Of Hell a survival horror
game that revolves around exploration and killing zombies. It took the
author 7 years to make it apparently (although 2004 + 7 surely makes
2011?)

Maybe we finally have a zombie killing game that has some actual depth
to it at last?

What I would like for you to ask me right now Mr Rob, is this question:

"Hey, Schro, I know how you love all things zombie - especially zombie
shooting games, and especially with the recent disappointment of L4D2 I also
know you would really like to play this mod.  In light of this, Schro, can
you find your UT2004 disc?"

Just like that ^^, go on - ask me.

Oh dear.

I don't know where mine is either and I didn't realise that it was
needed to play the game.

Up to the attic I go then.

Bugger.

I've just realised that I got UT2004 via Steam.

I have at least two problems here.

The first is that it's on a Steam account that I can't remember the
password for. I let my Wife use it to play silly games like Peggle and
some naff indie games. She doesn't have a clue what the password was
either. I'm not even sure what email address it was registered to
either.

The second is that I don't know whether this mod will work with the
Steam version.

Arse. It might be easier to get a copy from ebay. After all this
shenanigans the mod is bound to be shit.

Did anybody d-load it?  All I see on the website is a demo of the 2005
version which says, in brackets, 'severely out of date'.  Not the kind
of demo I want.  Is there a demo for the 2009 version?

Ah, yes...  The true joys of  lost accounts/passwords for junk on-line
authentication schemes like Steam...... Maybe if you email Valve, they
could track down your original payment and charge you a mere $10 or so
to revive your account?

Some times it's nice to have the PC games on physical media and
without suffocating on-line DRM authentication, a la Steam, EA, Atari
and others. Some days it is SO comforting to be old-fashioned and
retro.... I spy my retail copy of UT2004 on the shelf. Thanks for the
link to the mod.

It's out, but you have to check the forums to get the download link. I don't
know why he hasn't updated the main site.

It's pretty dreadful so far. The first "level" consists of talking to people
that are very difficult to find, and if you adjust the gamma to what the
game suggests, you can't really see anything. After the first level, you
wake up in a completely different spot (outside) than you fell asleep
(inside), with no explaination of why or where your "supplies" you packed
the night before are. Zombies come at you and you must dodge, since it seems
you can't kill them with the one weapon you have, a knife. Why do I even
have a knife then? The worst part is, apparently you're supposed to get
somewhere, but there are quite a few dead ends. If you walk down a dead end,
the zombies follow you and cut you off. Game over, restart from level 2.

What a waste. It's obvious the developer has some talent, just not at making
a game fun.

I got it sorted out swiftly enough via my main Steam account.

I was actually quite impressed with how quickly the support person
sorted it out for me.

I really looked forward to this, the graphics aren't too bad, the
sound isn't either.  But the sound of heavy rain for 20 or 30 minutes
while I stumbled my way through the first boring level really got to
me, I had to turn the volume down.

I stuck it out until I started meeting zombies.  The zombie models
aren't bad but their animation and behavior were not very well done.
Very claustraphobic levels with lots of stuff to get stuck on as
well.  I had to restart the level twice because I got stuck on/in
something and couldn't move.  It's a great achievement, maybe it gets
better, but the combat just wasn't fun enough for me to go on.

I agree on some of the negative points of Steam but so far none have affected
me in the slightest. In fact I think the only thing that would concern me
would be if Valve went belly up how they would handle unlocking the games.

But your point about lost passwords doesn't really gel. By your example, if I
forget my online banking password then it's the banks fault and I should
instead keep all my cash under my bed? ;-)

I can't call it complete junk, since I quit after repeated deaths on the
second level and haven't seen the rest. Even if I had a gun, the zombies
just keep coming apparently if you kill one. If only he received some solid,
constuctive criticism throughout the process, it could be an interesting
game. Maybe there'll be a Out of Hell 2 that addresses the problems, but
until then, I would recommend sticking with Zombie Master, L4D, Zombie
Panic, or whatever your zombie game of choice is.
