Why is this echo filled with posts from comp.sys.apple2? I don't know about you, but if I want to read comp.sys.apple2 I'll read it from a usenet feed. If FidoNet users have nothing to say in this echo then so be it. We don't need to it to be a copy of comp.sys.apple2 as that adds no value. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, that's how I felt too. It was explained to me that Fido is gating a few usenet groups (not just csa2) to increase traffic. In a way, I understand it ... not every Fido SysOp has access to a free or inexpensive usenet feed for their BBS so gating gets the content out to more boards.
On the other hand, those who have access to Fido and whatever usenet is being gated, reading the dupes gets old really fast.
And whatever happened for Fido pride? Back in the day, Fido (and a number of other nets, RIME for example) were pretty militant about keeping their networks independent, self-contained communities within themselves. To me, it seems Fido is using newsgroups as lifesupport for a few slow echos.

Nine Nets for the Fidonetters, Seven Nets for the RIMEnetters, Three Nets for the Compusetters, One Internet to rule them all.

Boggle! Fido-net still exists?? I just assumed it faded away along with the rise of the the internet.

because the sysop of the derby city bbs in KY decided to keep the fido APPLE echo "alive" by gating the newsgroup...

it isn't "fido" that is doing it... it is one sysop on one system that is doing it...
and, i'll also note that there are still many folk who enjoy the apple machines and won't go near a newsgroup because of the bad reputation that they got when the spammers started harvesting addresses from newsgroups and spamming their shite into the groups...
in any case, if it is a problem, take it up with the sysop of the derby city bbs ;)
Bye bye! mark

AFAIK the international C echo is not on Fido anymore. I get my feed through a list serve. BTW Bob Stout just released a version of snippets for embedded systems. My stuff from the early days is still on PDNCEE though. Lots of the old timers like Jerry Coffin are still around too.
For a memory jog click on one or all of the following:
If we didn't have an academic account it was all we around here back then. I can't understand why anyone would kfetch and bemoan receiving a csa2 feed though. This is an extremely civilized bunch here and certainly as worthy as anything fido ever had IMNSHO.

Bill, your quote there should be TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch). Robert Heinlein use to use that in several of his science fiction novels. In fact I think he coined that phrase, but I'm not 100% sure.
