I'm brand new to this group but certainly not new to its subject
matter.
First things first... My vitals:
Name: Steve McLean
Age: 44
Location: Chandler, AZ (PHX Metro)
Marital status: Married, Father of 2 girls 18 & 15 (God help me!)
Occupation: Owner Computer Shop, Writer, Softball Coach
Extracurricular: Keyboardist, Singer, Blog writing
Graduated High School:1981 Dublin, CA
Favorite Bands: Journey (Easy guys, be gentle...) RUSH, Kansas
Favorite Albums: ESC4PE, Leftoverture, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
OK, now that we got that out of the way, let's get to the meaty part.
Those of us who grew up in the 70's share something very unique and
very cool: Some of the rock bands we grew up with are still around
today, still eeking out an existence (some eeking more than others) by
touring and playing the casino and smaller venue circuit than they
once did, but still playing just the same. For instance, last summer's
hot ticket was Journey, Heart & Cheap Trick. I saw them 5 times on
that tour ( I work for Journey off and on writing show reviews and
press releases so the tickets were free.) And with the exception of
the absences of Steve Perry and Steve Smith of Journey, the major
players of those bands were rockin' just as hard as they did back in
the day. The term "Classic Rock" is a tough one to define. Granted the
bulk of the music I listen to and own is 20 years old or older but
there is a lot of metal mixed in there as well as some contemporary
stuff as well. From AC/DC to Zepplin, from Aerosmith to Zebra and from
Anthrax to Zappa, I listen to it. In addition to listening to classic
rock, I've kept up on the major (and not so major) happenings in the
rock music world and consider myself a rock trivia semi-expert. Here's
one for ya: Roger Bumpass, the voice of Squidward on Spongebob
Squarepants, was also the voice of Hanover Fiste in the movie Heavy
Metal.
I've been playing keys for almost 40 years and played in my first
actual band when I was 14. Being a keyboardist, I tend to like a lot
of ballads (I know, I know....) but show me a keyboard player who
isn't a sentimental sap and I'll eat my hat! And as you might probably
guess, I tend to like the bands from the 70's with a lot of keyboard
influence. My home stereo kicks ass - a pre-requsite of any self
respecting rocker - and features BIG bulky speakers that could be
considered pieces of furniture. Can you say "Fisher, Cerwin-Vega and
Infinity".... no little cubes hanging on my walls! My stereo setup
still includes a Denon turntable and my vinyl is stored in peach
crates the way they were meant to be! I listen to music loud and I
play air keyboard while driving! The only skeleton in my Rock Closet
is the fact that my very first concert was ABBA, yeah that's right
ABBA! Hey, I was 13 and I won tix from a radio station by being the
right number caller and answering a question about Elton John.
The "rock slang" from my generation consisted of words like, "killer,
stoked, solid, bitchin' (Damn that Moon-Unit Zappa for soiling a
perfectly good word like that!) excellent, choice, trippindicular,
tasty, stylin' " and many more
For those who are keyboard enthusiasts, I'll list the rig I used to
lug around back in the late 70's - early 80's. I can do everything and
1000% more on a single keyboard today!
Fender-Rhoades 88 key suitcase electric piano
Hammond B3 w/ rotating Leslies
Micro Moog
Maxi Korg
Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Thanks for reading and
thanks to the mods for creating this group!
Regards,
Steve

Lots of Journey fans on here (including me) so no need to apologise.
Everyone here is musically very open minded and we dont tend to have a
go at each other for musical differences. We do enjoy a good debate,
however.
And I am very jealous that you got to see Abba!
