Subject: Next ride: Sunday 1 Nov - Heide Museum + Lilydale-Warburton Ride + Route 86
In this email:
1. Next ride to Heide Museum
2. Lilydale - Warburton family ride
3. Feedback requested on revised #86 tram route
1. Next ride
Hope you're able to join my family and I on a ride to Heide Museum of Modern Art next Sunday. The sculpture garden and kitchen gardens are fabulous and free. I'm sure your kids, like mine, will love them. There are some great looking exhibitions on at Heide that look child-friendly. Admission prices here (children under 12 are free). There is a café at the Museum.
Although only a little over 5km, It's a rather challenging ride for little kids as there are hills, mostly downhill - given my 5 year old on training wheels will be with us, we may be do a bit of walking! There is a playground for a decent break along the way (but no toilets!).
Route to the Museum here. We'll travel along a busy-ish road that buses go along. I may ride on the footpath with my 5 year old - it's legal to ride on the footpath if accompanying a child under 12. Going home will be shorter - we'll take a short cut to Heidelberg station.
Meet:
10.15am Platform 2, Westgarth Railway Station - South Crescent, Northcote
OR
10.39am Platform 2, Rosanna Railway Station - Douglas Street, Rosanna
OR
Somewhere en route - let us know where we should look out for you.
You'll need:
* A Zone 1 & 2 Metcard - the cheapest way to travel on Sundays is with either a Sunday Saver or a Weekend Daily metcard. These aren't available at Westgarth. Click here to find out more info and where they can be purchased.
* Snacks & water for the ride - the kids will probably want to stop a few times. They'll probably be hungry and thirsty.
* Money for lunch & snacks (if you don't bring your own) or admission into the museum
* Bike locks, so you don't need to watch your bikes
* Sunscreen
* Raincoats (just in case)
* Helmets
2. Lilydale - Warburton Family Ride - Sun 1 November
For those of you interested in a longer ride, or even a weekend away if you can get Monday off work, you may be interested. Info here.
3. Tram route 86 - Feedback requested
Direct from Kate, Darebin's Transport Strategy Coordinator:
You may or may not be aware of the Tram Route 86 Corridor Improvement Project in Darebin. We've been working for the past 18-24 months on a proposal to make the tram faster, more reliable, accessible, safer and to improve our shopping strips.
Its a 7km stretch of Route 86 and a 25% tram travel time saving is predicted (unheard of!) as well as unprecendented changes to our activity centres and potential investment in the community of $60-$70 million over the next 5 years.
We are currently in a consultation phase. Our initial consultation with the community in early 2009 resulted in Council working with four Community Reference Groups to revise the proposal to address some issues that the community had.
The re-worked proposal and information can be found at www.darebin.vic.gov.au/route86
If you live, work, visit or play in Darebin, please tell us what you think. We will have many saying that cars and parking is paramount and we're working hard to extract the positive responses from the community and others - the ones that generally wouldn't make a submission or fill in a survey.
Spread the word ... give us your feedback!
Don't forget these are Darebin BUG rides. Please support your local grassroots cycling organisation that works to make cycling safer and easier in Darebin.
Hope to meet you and your bikes soon.
Kathy

350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM-a "people powered movement".
