Subject: Acacia chinchillensis - frost damage
Does anyone grow Acacia chinchillensis successfully? My young plant
formed lots of flower buds this year and last year, but both seasons
these have been so badly burned by frost that I get no flowers. It has
beautiful foliage and otherwise is growing well.

I don't know whether to persist with it, or whether I should replace
it with a species more suited to our climate. I can expect several
frosts each winter, and as it is not a large-growing plant I don't
expect it to grow above the frost-damage zone.

Yes, mine is still quite young, but flowering okay. Only just a metre
high, but possibly sheltered a little from frost by nearby trees, and
gets afternoon sun - clay soil, and on top of a slope. Don't know if
that's any help.

Dear Newbie

Yes, that does help. Mine is shaded for much of the afternoon in
winter, so maybe the cold air pools around it. You've encouraged me to
persist with it for a few more years, and perhaps to take cuttings to
grow a replacement in a sunnier part of the garden.

Thanks! Elaine
