Good to see the rain falling where it's really needed :-).

Don't have the numbers handy, but some of the sites in this region must be getting within striking distance of 3000mm for the year.

Hi Clyve

I think that makes five floods in that Coffs Bellingen area this year.

From the rainfall data that I download daily from the BOM site, the following are the totals for 2009 so far that exceed 1000mm for stations 59000-59200 (mid north coast):

      DORRIGO (OLD CORAMBA RD)     3103.8
      KALANG (KOOROOWI (SHARABEL))     2786.8

Hi All

I said five floods, but checking daily data would probably be more accurate to say six floods this year.  For Bellingen 14 -17/2: ~ 535 mm, 31/3 - 1/4: ~ 492mm, 22 - 23/5: ~ 292 mm, 20 - 22/6 ~ 310mm, according to reports on W'Zone ~ 400mm, b/n 26 & 28/10, and as of 1 hr ago, ~ 240 mm in the latest event.

Looking back it seems for three of the first five months this year they recorded over 700mm, and they'd clocked up 2,400 by end of May, so Bellingen would no doubt be giving Dorrigo a run for their money.

It's a bit of a hippy new age enclave, so looks like someone there has learnt the rain dance.

Incidentally I just listened to a bit of today's podcast of the ABC's Country Hour and they also mentioned 6 flood events to date.

Clyve I'm hoping that you'll get your 3100mm next year.

It will surely mean the dry spot might get a 300 again.

Hi Clyve, the rain at Dorrigo had me seriously thinking of moving up there a couple of years ago, though it seems Coff's is getting it at the moment! Crazy reason for most people but not for a weather nut. Beautiful place too.

Chances are that had I arrived, the rain would have said 'Goodbye, it's through the Door-I-go'...I've got a Coff.'

I have Bellingen (Crystal Creek) at 2643.5 to the end of May. Based on data from the likes of Coffs Harbour (1031.6 since 1 June) and Urunga (735.4 for June-October), and the occasional real-time reports from the site itself, I would estimate something in the 800-1200 range for Crystal Creek since 1 June, taking its annual total to somewhere in the mid-upper 3000s. This is starting to get within range of the NSW annual record, which is 4539.7 (Tallowwood Point in 1950).

Note that Crystal Creek is 12km north of Bellingen; there is no official gauge in the town itself.

Blair
