But on paper for the bean counters 7 seats have been lost per service, a
more than acceptable loss. Comfort and the 'extras' like luggage space
don't come into it - especially since the Endevours are basically short
distance commuter train.
Probably lucky they didn't try moving the seats even closer together to

Erm, 200 seats and oodles of spacefor suitcases, bicycles, etc
to 193 seats and very limited luggage space.
plus, you breath exhaust fumes all the way. (BTDT).

Slower and I was under the impression that some of the Syd-Melbourne rail
freight was basically containers travelling to and from specific ships

From memory, on at least some of the units it would be difficult to do
this because the door slides into the wall of the unit, and the ledge is
flush with the wall. It might be possible to cut back the floor to the
door, but there might be a structural bar there, and this might fall
foul of the rules about the gap between the platform and the train.

Simple solution would be to put a flare on the outside of the doors so
that the door tapers out flush with the outside edge of the step.

I tried this at Town Hall platform 4 (up ESR). It took just over 1 minute.
To me, the problem isn't the trains - it's the stations. You get a pair
of trains arriving at Town Hall 5 & 6 in peak hour, and the platform
gets full rather quickly.

Not necessarily. It is possible to run mixed traffic on systems
equipped with moving block, provided that they also have line-side
signals (which are cancelled for the moving-block trains, which have
cab-signalling).
The real question with moving block is does "pack the trains in" solve
