Subject: Fall in ANZ job ads figures shows economy is still 'vulnerable'
THANK

YOU

LABOUR!

http://www.news.com.au/business/story/0,27753,26324086-462,00.html

THE number of jobs advertised in major newspapers and online fell by 1.7 per
cent in October, after two months of growth, and shows the economic recovery
remains vulnerable.

Overall job ads totalled 133,709 in the month, down from 136,070 in September,
with newspaper job ads falling by 1.4 per cent and internet job ads declining by
1.8 per cent.

The result comes after rises of 4.4 per cent in September and 4.1 per cent in
August.

"As an indicator of underlying economic conditions, these results highlight that
the recovery of the Australian economy is still vulnerable to set backs," ANZ
acting chief economist Warren Hogan said.

"These results suggest that the economy remains soft and is only at an early
stage of recovery."

ANZ currently expected the nation's unemployment rate to peak at around 6.6 per
cent in mid-2010. The rate is currently at 5.7 per cent.

The ANZ survey found the number of jobs advertised in major metropolitan
newspapers averaged 8800 a week.

The number of internet job advertisements averaged 124,909 per week.

In year-on-year terms, overall job ads are down 44.9 per cent, newspapers ads
are down 33.8 per cent and internet ads are down 42.8 per cent.

The Age, 30 August 2007:

"In 1995, the year before the Howard Government took office,
Australia's short-term interest rates were the 12th highest in the
OECD but are now the fourth highest. Despite claims of low interest
rates, real interest rates (adjusted for inflation) are persistently
higher than the OECD average."
