SYDNEY An oil rig which has been leaking thousands of barrels of oil into the Timor Sea off Australia's northwest coast for more than two months was on fire Sunday, the company said.

"PTTEP Australasia reports the West Atlas rig and Montara well head platform are on fire," the firm said in a statement.
A spokeswoman for the company said specialists had finally succeeded in the first stage of plugging the well, which has been spilling up to 400 barrels of oil each day into the ocean since August 21.
"They had not actually stopped or killed the leak... and then unfortunately the fire broke out," she told AFP.
PTTEP said all personnel working at the isolated site some 250 kilometres (155 miles) offshore had been reported safe and non- essential staff were being evacuated. The company gave no indication of the severity of the blaze.
Other oil and gas wells in the quake zone will all suffer the same fate

Following widespread fraud in the August first round, Abdullah had demanded Karzai sack Azizullah Ludin, the head of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
He also demanded the suspension of four ministers who campaigned for Karzai.

Australia was the famous penal colony of England
It is no public secret that Australia was the famous penal colony of England; Where English deported their unwanted criminals as the punishment. If it was the main reason behind the stupid, idiotic, ignorant and violent behavior of today's Australians, we might as well as forgive this poor souls for their ignorance. But unfortunately this could not be the only reason for the arrogant and stupid behavior of many Australians today.
One should not forget Australia is one of the few countries in the world, who carried out mass scale systematic genocide of the natives well in to the second half of the 20th century.
Australians killed, raped, kidnapped (children) and pillaged the native Australians (aborigines) well in to 1960's and even today they intimidate the foreign scholars who try to investigate this matter. It is a sad irony, these criminals try to act as puritans and dictate the terms for others without cleaning their own backyard

Idolatrous, the Celts and their refined conception of the divine, who have dominated the world during several millennia and which have elaborated myths taken again by Christianity? Ignorant, the Buddhist, whose spirit glides above the feelings of villainy? Idolatrous, the Jains, who do not kill animal and forbid to themselves any violence ? How much base feelings this despise, this self-conceit expresses. My Goodness! Free us from these desert prophets, hellish creatures, presumptuous, wicked, ignorant, who come out from the dark age heading hosts of warriors of apocalypse, with foam at the mouth, with erected sticks, the very servants of Satan! "The prophets, these goats with a long beard, cannot pretend to any intellectual or spiritual superiority... Their duplicity is obvious by their very contradicting each other... CASHED-up agribusiness companies that sold their low reliability water to the Federal Government are back in the market to replenish their supplies.
Mildura's Tandou Limited sold 250,000 megalitres of supplementary water for $34 million to the NSW and Federal Governments on December 2 last year.
Yet last week the Tandou board announced it wanted to "expand its water portfolio" as part of its strategy to become a water trading house.
"We believe the Australian water industry displays characteristics that are attractive for investment, particularly, strong demand for water for a range of uses, combined with supply limitations due to climate change, conservative water management of water allocations and the buy back of water entitlement by the Commonwealth," the board announced.
Tandou's counterpart, Twynam, is also rumored to be back in the water market, with one broker stating it was "well known" the company was buying temporary water.
Twynam sold 240,000 megalitres of general and supplementary water entitlements to the Federal Government for $303 million last May.
A search of the NSW Water Access Licence Register shows Twynam sold its general security shares to the NSW Government for $1309 a megalitre, but retained its licence on the Murrumbidgee irrigation system.
Retaining its WAL allows Twynam managers to buy in temporary water to meet their irrigation needs.
Brokers told The Weekly Times it made far more sense to buy "real" water on the allocation or temporary market than retain general security entitlement on the Murrumbidgee that gained miserable allocations of 21 per cent last season (2008-09), 14 per cent in 2007-08 and 15 per cent in 2006-07 - an average rate of return of $33 to $50 worth of water on an entitlement worth $1309 a megalitre.
In contrast Twynam could buy a full megalitre of allocation water on the temporary water market for $200 to $300 a megalitre in most of those seasons.
Twynam executive chairwoman Christine Campbell refused to respond to The Weekly Times questions on the issue.
Tandou and Twynam's water trading strategies follow moves by US-owned Summit Water Holdings earlier this year to buy $20 million of Australian irrigators' water as part of its $500 million global water- purchasing strategy.
