Thanks for that info Richard. I must admit I was mainly interested
because I have some old colour pics and slides that have seriously
degraded (especially 30-year-old Ectachrome slides taken when I was
foolish and ignorant enough to use it instead of Kodachrome).

I had to download the image and zoom in to see it. It appears its a damaged
pixel on the CCD a few pixels from the top. That affects the rest of the column
of pixels. I gather its more pronounced depending on the background colour.

What's the brand that he currently has? I would have thought that it'd have a
cover that drops over the CCD while the lens is being changed.
I searched too (see other post). Not much out there by way of faulty CCD images.

Hmm ... it might be something different then. But you can confirm my one by
pointing at a bright light source. However, the vertical lines are wider than 1
pixel. They're usually as wide as the size of the image of the light.

Is it in the direction of the sun or a very bright light? If so, its an artefact
of CCDs and digital cameras. Point a digital camera at a very bright light
source, like the sun, and you'll get a vertical line. Different cameras have
different colours but the cause is always the same.
