I have not posted in a long time as I had been doing fairly well. With a worsening of my symptoms (sinus pain, drainage, irritated membrane etc) I am thinking about seeing (yet another....I have had five surgeries) a new ENT to try and get some help. I can get to NYC easily and am wondering who the group feels is the best ENT there? Thanks for any replies...

Has Tichenor fallen out of favor, or something? I thought he was generally held in /really/ high esteem??

The annual U.S. News & World Report survey of the best hospitals in America by department, shows that the best ENT department in NYC is in Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital (surprisingly, since their main specialty is cancer). It's rated 13th best in the nation.
Someone else mentioned Dr. Tichenor, on the Upper East Side.
He knows his stuff, but he's an allergist. He does allergy and antibiotic treatments. He doesn't do surgery, and he doesn't seem to be a fan of surgery.
BTW, it's only about 100 miles from Albany to Chelmsford MA, where my own ENT is. You might consider him: Dr. Eric Stein, Chelmsford MA. And the living costs are much cheaper than in NYC, so you can stay there a couple of days if necessary.

Yep, folks tend to forget that you can go from Albany to northern Massachusetts very easily by Interstates 90 and 495 You don't have large cities with bumper-to-bumper traffic to worry about either. Just set cruise control and relax.
Stein is part of a group. All those ENTs are good.

Judy - I can't say he is the best - but only that I have had a very successful experience with
Michael G. Stewart, M.D. 1305 York Avenue 5th Floor New York, NY 10021 Phone: (646) 962-6673 Fax: (212) 746-8339
Nasal polyps were my issue - suffered for 6 years - nose would get totally blocked - on prednisone most of the time - my original ENT did not think surgery was needed. I saw Dr. Stewart and after some testing - he scheduled surgery - the surgery lasted an hour and a half - and I was home the same day. My polyps have not returned and I have not taken prednisone since. Of course everyone's experence will be different - but I can tell you mine went well!
The below is a link to a brochure that will get you the information you need. I know if you do some google seaches you will find some past video's of interviews with the Doctor on major television channels.

I take nasonex twice a day and have quarterly checkups.
I have been fortunate up to now.
Also before the surgery I was hospitalized twice with breathing issues related to asthma which was always treated with massive doses of prednisone ( I really hate the stuff ) but since the surgery I have not had any symtoms of asthma - I still take Advair and singular on a regular basis - but if symptoms do not return by this spring I am going to work with my doctor to start weaning off. I am really trying to get off as much medication as possible. I will be 58 this year. Wish I had the surgery 8 years ago.

I have had testing only to reveal slight allergies to ragweed and dust mites. We went and did our best to rid any dust mite issues and have filtered air throughout the home. I really do not show severe symptoms from any allergies during the ragweed season - no sneezing - teary eyes- etc. So I am going to keep on the medication for another one to two years and then try weaning off and see wait for the results and adjust from there.
If I need to remain on small doses of steroid treatment - I opt for that rather than taking prednisone which for me plays havoc with my heart and emotions. I have been sleeping through the night for 10 months now - which is really nice - and if I do wake up I really appreciate that I am breathing easily through my nose and not my dry mouth as I used to...

If she lives in NYC, she's probably getting polyps and asthma from the smog.
Particulates and sulfur dioxide are intensely irritating to the mucous membranes of both the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
That's how I got chronic sinusitis. I made the mistake of buying a home that was downwind of a factory that was the biggest polluter of sulfur dioxide in Middlesex County.
