Jo,
What kind of reaction did you have from the injection?  I had one over a
week ago and had a sore arm for a few days and then it was itchy for a
day or so, but that's all.  Was it supposed to do more than that?

I don't know that it was supposed to do anything at all, but I had a
large red welt (nearly 2 inches across) at the injection site for
nearly a week.

I just figure any reaction to a vaccine means your body is
responding to it.

yep, that makes sense to me.  I'm still waiting to see how much the
injection will cost.  Doctor says its covered, but cust. service at
insurance gave me two different prices.

Its crazy.  Its covered by Medicare part D, but how much they pay is
affected by your other expenses for the year.  If you have Medicare
and something else it gets even more complicated.

They are giving the shots at a lot of pharmacies in Sacramento.
Don't know how they deal with insurance.

But everyone I know that has ever had shingles would happily have
paid the entire cost out of pocket to avoid what they've been
through.

Twice over I would pay.  They lasted so long even having had the antiviral
and my large doses of gabapentin.

I had to pay for mine, since at that time, it had to be done in a doctor's
office or an official medical clinic.  The stop and see type of clinic they
have at the pharmacy does not count.  Also, I could not pick up the serum at
my pharmacy, as it has to be kept cold until it is to be used and then it is
to be mixed just before it is administered.  It was complicated.  The cost
wasn't too awfully bad.  I don't remember what it was.  Having seen my dad
suffer so badly from the shingles meant I would have paid anyhow.

I'm very happy to pay for it once everyone decides how much it costs.
The doctor's office is going to invoice me after they hear from the
insurance.  We don't even have clinics in our pharmacy here and the
doctor explained the time limits to me of getting it from there to his
office.  It's either going to be $30 or $87.50 so it's well worth it
either way.

Medco used to ship my MTX injectable packed in small styrofoam boxes.
I kept a couple (packrat).  I put a frozen gelpak into the box and
took it to the pharmacy when picking up my shingles vax.  My doc
was really impressed ... but billed me anyway!
