It is so beautiful outside! Full sunshine and about 60F at 3 pm. This is the sort of weather we *should* have had some of last month, but it was chilly with tons of rain instead. On top of that - my body is actually doing fairly well today, so I can enjoy the weather some. I worked in the yard for 2 1/2 hours this morning and had to talk myself out of continuing! Tomorrow is supposed to be just as nice and i need to behave myself in hopes of enjoying another day like this. I think I may go for a walk in a bit though.
Then Mike and I went out to the animal shelter and got a friend for Puddin' cat. The poor little one hasn't emerged from the cat carrier yet but each of us goes in to visit her periodically. She's about 18 months old and spent most of that time at the shelter so this is a big change for her. She doesn't seem anxious though - should just be a matter of time. Here's a picture of when she was a kitten on petfinder.com http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11575890

I thought the name Fresca was interesting. LOL Quigley's mom was Shasta (which also is the name of a brand of sodapop). Fresca is kind of cute. For a while I have wanted a grey cat, and before Quigley was given to me, I was looking for a grey British shorthair.
Nann, she is just beautiful. I wish I dared to get a kitten, but right now, I just can't take on anything new. When I had a cat and a dog, the medical bills were so high, I am just afraid of having those kind of bills again and I just don't have the money. So, I got one of those fuzzy little cats at the supermarket for $4.99 and pet it when I get the urge. Fresca is very lovely and the name fits her. Her eyes seem to be so big in my mind from when I looked at her picture. Have fun.

yup, the name works for us. poor thing, she's had her world so upset and she's not accustomed to repeated attention from people! She's hiding somewhere in her room right now. Hopefully she'll adjust to us fairly readily.

she actually has areas of tan and white that didn't show yet when that picture was taken. One leg is almost all tan/white. It's as if one parent as grey and the other calico with the calico just popping out here and there. Gives her character.
Yeah, the shelter said they were in a sodapop naming phase when she came in. They clearly remember having a "Squirt" also, heehee.

Congrats on the new kitty! Hope Fresca adjusts soon. She has a lovely face.
Am jealous cause we are ready for a kitty emotionally but not financially. And you are the 4th person in our circle of friends/family to get a cat in the last month!
Fresca is a lovely cat and the name seems right for her. When Steve the Cat came to live with me he had spent the first four years of his life at the vet office and had a rocky kittenhood with all his illnesses and his poor eyesight. He took about three or four days to explore the house and just had to learn about going up and down stairs. He now rules the house, of course. The cat before him hid in the fireplace for almost three months only coming out at night to eat and use the litterbox. She had come from an abusive situation though and only became cuddly with me in her later years. I hope Fresca settles in quickly and your big boy accepts her as quickly. I look forward to seeing more pictures.

With some cats it just takes an incredible amount of time and patience. We've had Molly, a formerly feral calico girl for five years. She has only just learned to ask for treats in the last few months. She sleeps on my feet, but only once she is quite sure I'm sound asleep. She will start to act really domestic, and then something will spook her and its like we are starting all over again.
We had a cat that had 3 kittens once and one of them looked like Fresca. We called it Smoky. It looked like a grey calico. One of the kittens looked like the mother - a real calico and the third one had patches of Mom on a background of Dad (a solid white male). I'll bet you can't guess what we called him! The kitten, I mean. Yep, Patches. LOL

heh - we went back and forth a lot on getting another. The overwhelming reason why we decided to was that Puddin' needs someone to play with, esp. when we are gone. And we have no one for him to stay wth where we are now when we're gone for longer periods, so someone will be coming in for a bit of each day.
For 2 people who never liked cats until Puddin' found us, we seem to be totally won over!

well a least we know she wasn't abused. Mike managed to pet her a bit just now. She's taken to sleeping under the thin comforter on the bed in "her" room - I suppose she feels safest that way. She did finally use the litter box so maybe we can convince her to eat something today. Even tuna fish didn't win her over yesterday.
I know it's a big change and I understand but it worried me when she wasn't eating or using the litter box. We're leaving her alone a lot right now in hopes that will help her take over that bedroom.

They all loved her at the shelter and were delighted she was finally being adopted - and by people who think her unique coloring gives her character. I don't mind her having to adjust to us, I just don't want her making herself sick with anxiety!

When we had gotten our last cat, he went under the bed and stayed there for three days. Then he came out, asserted his superiority over the dog and everything was fine from then on, as long as he ruled the roost! LOL

Maybe you could go sit in her room and just talk to her so she will get used to the sound of your voice. Of course you must use the right words, "you're a beautiful cat and we love you and are so glad you came to live with us and you are going to be so happy and won't you please eat something so I don't worry myself sick". You might also leave the door to her room open when you are nearby and see if curiosity will make her venture out. Ann
oh, she's beautiful nann! has Puddin' met her yet? I do hope they get along better than my two cats did. I think you're handling things just right with her. i can't wait to hear how this goes.
Yes, I'd be interested in how the two do when they meet and/or have to establish a pecking order. Fresca looks pretty much like she thinks she rules the roost. I would imagine she is in for a surprise when she thinks she is going to control Puddin'!

good idea - I hadn't been talking to her much when I went in there. But yesterday evening when I crawled into the closet after her to pet her some, I finally managed to get her purring a bit. Today when I wanted a nap, I slept on the bed in her room just to get her a bit more used to me. And I've spent an hour with her each of 2 times today showering her with affection and she went into the whole happy cat routine. But she still mostly stays in the back corner of the closet.
Yesterday I did find out what cat food they mostly use at the shelter and bought some of that for her. I *think* she ate a bit of it last night. Hopefully she'll eat more tonight after getting some affection today.
The funny thing is Puddin' has been trying to meet her, but not at all in an aggressive way - more curiosity. She's not ready to meet him yet, but it may go well when the time comes - assuming he's not TOO eager to have a friend!

LOL and Puddin's 2 1/2 times the weight of Fresca! OTOH, we've been told by cat people that the females usually rule. They're both affectionate cats though. Puddin' has had a more adventurous life so we'll have to see how much their attitudes differ.
