I would still try with diffused lighting/soft box, that's the main thing
I see as a way to improve the photo. The detail might still show or you
could add contrast.

The most reasonable way to shoot that type of product
photography is with inherently low contrast diffused
light in a tent or lightbox.  It helps *greatly* to
understand ETTR to get the maximum dynamic range
possible too.  And of course post processing is
essential if perfection is the goal.

That of course does *not* mean the total lighting
necessarily has to be so diffuse as to have no surface
texture at all.  But that *is* the place to start; and
then add oblique light to selectively enhance desired
textures.

The oblique light for surface texture would generally
not be shining straight at the object from the camera,
but rather would be from off to the one side.  That
would show the texture, and avoid much of the blown
highlights from reflections.  It can be strong enough to
also provide a very distinct, though not distracting,
shadow to the side of an object in order to give it
perspective.

The image of three drills at the URL quoted above is an
example of why diffuse light should be the main
illumination.  The drill bit on the left (the masonry
bit) has no blacks, and a significant percentage of the
area is blown highlights.  The surface "texture" is
virtually every surface feature causing a reflection
that becomes a blown highlight.  That is just not an
acceptable image to document what that drill looks like.

To make a good image of a "bright" bit next to a "black"
bit requires every bit of dynamic range one can muster,
and the easiest way to be successful is the use of low
contrast lighting.
