I went down and actually fondled a couple Canon point and shoots I'd been condidering. Plastic crap! The battery to my S10 weighs more. Are the lenses plastic, too? No wonder they require IS. I can see the older DSLRs will cost me more in the long run, but at least there's some metal somewhere in the device (other than the ext barrel).

Yep
if you drop one on the sidewalk it will probably break all right
but do you want to take photographs or do you want a "tank" ?
I'd judge a camera simply by how well it takes photographs.

That's the primary criteria. I like to consider for how long it will take them, what type of pictures, how I like the way it handles, together with a host of other things..

My A590 has an all glass lens. I wouldn't like to drop it but I've heard people say they can survive a drop to the pavement. If Canon didn't have a habit of overpowering the sensors or feature crippling them they'd be almost perfect for most casual or social use. The A720 and A650 are better.
I just got a used G9 off EBay (mint condition with less than 1000 shots taken). It's slightly bigger and nearly double the weight due to the metal case. It's a better specified and performing beast but has been knocked from jacket pocket to belt pouch territory.
SLR's are generally more feature complete, have better sensors and electronics, and the lenses speak for themselves. But, it's like comparing a small runabout to a grand tourer. They're compromised in other ways and if you're buying lenses you can't afford that trip to the Rockies, eh?

What, do you mean does it leak air? I read some people bitching about dust behind the lens after taking trips to the Sahara. Can't please everyone, eh?
I dunno. Gun go bang. Camera go click. Short of shipping a van load of whores and a crate of opium I'm not sure what else Canon could do.

LOL There ore two types of pressure compensation. One for high altitude and the other for multi atmosphere pressure, such as underwater uses. They do the high altitude pressure compensation with left handed wrenches. The right handed wrenches are used for underwater lenses, for high atmosphere pressure compensation
