Whoīs William? Hey, according to Janet, Rainbow has sold 20
copies since its release. Not much in the way of credibility,
huh? At least we now all agree that it has sold less than 3
million copies - a victory for the "trolls". I would go as far as
to say that it hasnīt sold much more than 2 million copies, and
that is based on observing other albums that were released at
around the same time. It will be a long, long time before it
actually deserves that 3x certification, let alone a 4x one.
Thereīs no way it could sell a million copies before the end of
July, since itīs not even in the Top 100.

No flaming, please, letīs try and discuss the matter like
civilised adults.

 Love to all,

 janine

PS. I can actually remember some Mariah fans making fun of
Celineīs album debuting at #3... still a Top 40 album. Certified
6x platinum, by the way.

Well peeps (especially MovieAmi).......here are the actual sales for
Rainbow:

2,8 million!!!!!

I found it on the mariah carey arhives:
RAINBOW SALES FIGURES

Yesterday I told you that Rainbow sold 2.118.213 copies as of the first of
February, 2000. According to William, Rainbow sold 2.8 million copies since
it's release. He thinks that, if Rainbow follows the other albums of Mariah,
then it will be 4x platinum by the end of July. Let's hope so.

Sounds good.  Then it's been averaging about 14,000 per week.  14,000 times
about 14 weeks equals only 200,000 copies.  It has not picked up much since
February, so those numbers are liberal.  I have email Fred Bronson at Billboard
for specific sales numbers, so hopefully he will post it at Billboard.

> He thinks that, if Rainbow follows the other albums of Mariah,
>then it will be 4x platinum by the end of July

Only if Sony overcertifies it by another 1 million.  It will NOT sell one
million for at LEASE another two years, even if she kept up at a steady rate of
about 10,000 per week.  Most catalog albums like Mariah's (even Madonna's)
don't sell near 10,000 per week after dropping off the Top 200.  So, let's say
she DOES sell 10,000 a week for 2 years (which is TOTALLY improbable.)  From
now until then, that's 104 weeks, it will have sold 1,040,000, therefore
earning another certification.  But, like most catalog albums, Mariah will be
lucky to sell 1,000 copies of Rainbow per week.  As we speak she is only
selling 10,000 copies per week, so her rise up the charts right now isn't
likely.  The album has run its course.  It has ONLY sold no more than 2.3
million.  It still has yet to justify its 3 million certification.  It will
probably take another year for that to be fulfilled!

> Let's hope so.

Sony would be really stupid to overcertify it.  BUt, hey, it's a normal
practice for them.

Let's see... correct me if I'm wrong. Thomas said that Heartbreaker reached
#16 on Billboard Hot 100 with airplay alone, right? And, MovieAmi, you are
saying that Beautiful Stranger reached #19 on the Hot 100. OK, now, let's
anaylze. You and Joker both agreed that BS reached #19. The only different
between your statements is that Joker said it was all by airplay, and you
simply said it reached that place. Let's assume you implied that BS reached
#19 with both airplay and sale. Either way, in your or Joker's case, BS's
achievement is less than that of Heartbreaker, because Heartbreaker reached
#16 with airplay only, and BS reached #19 with airplay only or with both
airplay and sale.

I don't really care if Heartbreaker or BS made it higher with airplay only.
It's just the fact that your pointless bashing of MC is getting to be so
ridiculous that I think someone needs to knock your head in attempt to wake
you up once in a while.

Don't count MARIAH out just yet. SHE is only on HER third single... so it's
release could always help spur sales. It's true that Rainbow is currently
selling 10,000 copies a week in the U.S... but your estimate of 2.3 million
copies sold in total is NOT correct. MARIAH has actually sold 2.8 million
copies (in just 7 months) and WILL surely surpass the 3 million mark before
the year is up. That is quite fantastic for an album that was put together
in just 3 months! I know for a fact that Rainbow sold 2 million of it's
copies by the10th week of it's release because I was personally tracking the
sales of this album myself using officially released soundscan figures.
(Feel free to look it up!) So with that said, it's not hard to believe that
the remaining 800,000 copies were sold over the last 18 weeks. Do keep in
mind that the album was released prior to Christmas... so that definitely
helped sales as well.

> Sony would be really stupid to overcertify it.  BUt, hey, it's a normal

Those scoundrels at Sony!! Always cheating on MARIAH'S behalf! Now it makes
perfect sense why SHE'D want to get out of a contract with a company that
goes out of it's way to make HER look good by buying HER #1's and
over-certifying HER albums. <eyes rolling>

It's creative control.   If you notice that most artists on the Sony
label just hint at creativity.
Everytime Mariah tries to be creative she is held back.  Most
"groundbreaking artists" aren't on the Sony label.  Think about it.
Of course Mariah would want more money, but that's part of it.

I doubt Tommy is helping the situation.

Just for the record I want to say that I would really like to see mariah
carey get more creative control. Maybe then I wouldn't be able to bitch
about her music sounding the same all the time. I'm not going to sit here
and say that I don't think Mariah Carey has talent, becuase she does. It
just really saddens me that she never tries anything new. I'm sorry, but
everything since Daydream just sounds the same to me and thats why I've
never purchased Rainbow. Mariah Carey is the type of artist that could
really change things in todays music scene, but she just hasn't. The main
reason I am so fond of Madonna is because she is constantly changing, and
continuously pushing musical boundries. Madonna rarely does the same thing
twice, and that is one of the main factors that have kept her on top.

Yeah right. For a woman who (I will admit) has been so successful to a label,
I'm sure she has plenty of power to be creative.  However, I know that she
feels she has to continue churning shit after shit.  Mariah knows what she is
doing.  She wants more number ones.  It's a formula.  Let's go all the way back
to the (near) beginning.

1993-Mariah releases "Music Box," which contains R&B pop producer Babyface,
very popular at the time.

1995-Mariah releases "Daydream", containing Fantasy which has a solo by ODB,
from HipHop group of the moment Wu-Tang.

1997-Mariah releases "Butterfly", which contains "Honey," a song that
prominantly features rapper of the moment Puff Daddy (I'll Be Missing You had
just been released).

1999-Mariah releases "Rainbow," an album that contains "Heartbreaker" which
features a solo by rapper of the moment (biggest rap album of 1999-2000) Jay-Z.

See?  I wonder who'll be on her next album.  SHE doesn't decide who to work
with.  She's too much of a bitch to take that shit.  She has total creative
control and don't say she doesn't.  Her creativity just isn't very creative.

Oh. You're last three all involve rappers. Is Babyface a rapper? He was a very
popular producer at the time, Mariah wasn't the first, nor the last to work
with him. She worked with Walter for her first 4 studio albums. What's your
point? Whitney has worked w/ Babyface, as has Toni, and a whole other bunch of
artists. Mariah even helped him by singing back up on Everytime I Close My
Eyes. She last worked with him on When You Believe, and his popularity had gone
south at that point.

>1995-Mariah releases "Daydream", containing Fantasy which has a solo by ODB,

Puhleeze. You act as if you know her. That was one of the first (I believe it
was the first even) times that Mariah worked with a rapper. Did you want her to
choose some no-name? She also worked with Da Brat on ABMB, and she has never
been HUGELY popular.

>1997-Mariah releases "Butterfly", which contains "Honey," a song that
>prominantly features rapper of the moment Puff Daddy (I'll Be Missing You had

GASP! She also worked with him pre-PUFFY the rapper in 1996 with Fantasy on
Daydream before people even knew who he was!

>1999-Mariah releases "Rainbow," an album that contains "Heartbreaker" which
>features a solo by rapper of the moment (biggest rap album of 1999-2000)

Oh puhleeze. She also had work featuring Joe (and he was HUGELY popular at the
time, as if), and she worked with JD too... You gave four examples, which don't
hold up very strongly.
