The band refered to themselves as "The Motherfsckers", because "motherfscker" was slang (at least amongst musicians in L.A.) for "damn good musician".
They shortened it to "The Mothers" for public consumption.
When they signed to their record company (Verve/MGM), the company insisted that they changed it to "The Mothers Of Invention" to try to avoid the association.
