Subject: Cutting a Stroke
I have a stroked oval, and need to cut a chunk out, so that
only a portion of the stroke is visible.

I've tried using pathfinder by putting an object in front of
the oval and hitting "subtract from shape area" but it adds
an extra line to the stroked oval, so that the entire path
connects.

Any help appreciated.

You can make a clipping mask to show only the part you want to show.
Or you can scissor the path (a more drastic method).

or use the eraser tool to just erase what you don't want.
