Hi Brendan, interesting and useful posting!

Just one idea: how about the 'execute()' method from your example to
return the exception object instead of a boolean value.
It might prove useful when the business code is using a custom stack
of application exceptions.

I also recommend using a reference entity usage in your view object to
manage reference description data for lookup fields.

I've seen a number of anti-patterns in this area and I'm still trying to

would be useful...but I think it would be pretty hard to do at the
entity object level, at least alone. You might get entity objects to
add themselves (during their DML operations) to some table-like

Maybe Amir used the wrong kind of 'expression' field.
He needs to check the 'mapped to column or sql' in the VO attribute
properties.
Also check 'selected in query'
Then specify that inline query in the box meant for 'SQL expression' (under

this kind of behaviour - e.g. once you'd chosen an ID from an LOV on
Requester Provider there was a description field on the main page that
had been populated. How was that done? (if you don't mind me

It should work through expression, because at the end its the same - it just
injects into SQL statement. For me it works.

However, as JV says, its recommended to follow documented approach with
associations.

That is something we java people think is okay but the DBA's/performance
folks frown upon. Because your query would have a drastically different and
more expensive explain plan this way.
It might just save the network round trips to the DB but it's still an
inline query and to be avoided as far as possible IMHO.

i signed in and walked through the manual.
It seems realy good, yet i wander what is the scope of the project.
Is it just an easier way to implement procedure based entities?
The requirements that i have seen about this is to migrate oracle
Forms applications with procedure based blocks.

From this discussion, it hasn't emerged that it is in any way a bad
practice to have beans inherit methods/functionality from other base
classes.
So I guess it would hold true for event handler methods (like Value

For our current project we've done this, extending the concept a bit
further given experience from how good ol' Oracle Headstart for Forms
did it.

We've created the following layers:

a) An organisation wide custom set of ADF BC Impl's (call it common)
stored in it's own Jar
b) For each application they also get their own custom ADF BC Impl

We do have a number of commonly required custom codes in base classes.
Including:
PL/SQL calling in generic way in EO - Similar to one given by Avrom.
Integrating BI Publisher reports in VO
Exception handling and throwing in AM
Logging and Audit trails in AM

I am sure we will need more things as our project continues..

using JNDI Name for a Data source (NOT JDBC URL) so basically we are
not using ADF Database connection pooling but using default J2EE
container (Weblogic Server) Database Connection Pooling. We are still

We are also using base class for backing beans
We also use JSFUtils and ADFUtils.
In base backing bean we have methods for all actions and bindings to
template components.
(Like commit, rollback, insert, delete, exit, close, navigateTo,
openPopup etc)
We dont bind actions directly to bindings but allways to backing bean

Well, I don't know about the EL class *specifically*--you're really not
"supposed" (by Faces standards) to be resolving EL in your beans (as
opposed to using injection). But the general idea of using
utility/singleton/pseudo-singl eton classes (for things that can be
determined without injection, e.g., through BindingContext.getCurrent())

If you don't need any user interaction between API calls, wrapping all the
APIs into a single one, or simply calling all the APIs one after another
during a single request (activation/passivation only happens between
requests), is certainly your best bet.

temporary tables, but because it worked for the small number of users
