Subject: Firepod Problems
Is anyone using a Firepod as their audio output device? I'm unable to
get any sound out of it, and I already tried asio4all.

I run mine through a firepod, and yes, the Drum Brain is finnicky
about playing through it. Sometimes I have to turn the audio on and
off several times before it will start to output sound. Also, the
lowest latency I can get is 8 seconds. I think this is the Drum Brain
though...not the firepod. It will work, its just not reliable.

Are you using the original Firepod? I'm planning on getting a
FireStudio Tube and I'm wondering if the new models work better.

I'm actually using the FP-10, and I don't have a whole lot good to say
about it right this second to be honest. The firewire ports on it just
died on me and I've only had it about 40 days, Its being exchanged as
we speak. The problem as I see it is with the DrumBrain though, not
the firepod (or FP-10). It's using cycling '74 Max/MSP as it's
application host, and Max/MSP has a problem with the firepod as well
as far as I've been able to tell. Every other application I use works
without any hitches.

If you can, I would recommend running a ReWire host as your audio
engine (something like Ableton Live) and run the Drum Brain through
that as a ReWire slave device. It gives you a bit more flexibility in
terms of devices you can use (you can hook up Battery or any number of
drum brains all at the same time), and of course use whatever audio
out you want. Live works fantastically with the Firepod.

I don't know if the ports on the firestudio are any better than the
firepod, but if they are, I would go with that, since this isue with
the firepod appears to be systemic.

the lowest latency you can get is 8 seconds?  or milliseconds?  that
sounds like an issue with the firepod driver not the drum brain.  the
options that come up in a max/msp program's i/o vector size are a
result of the driver you choose for your interface.  what happens when
you try asio4all as a driver for the firepod?  when you change the
buffer size in the asio4all control panel it should also change
immediately in the drum brain driver window.  maybe firepod stability
with msp is based on specific i/o vector sizes.  how small a buffer
can you set using asio4all before there's crackling in your sound?

Just so you guys know, I got the FireStudio Tube and it works great.
No problems with the Drum Brain. I will warn you however that it uses
more CPU time than the old Firepod, so if your computer is more than a
couple years old you may not be able to get as low a latency as you
might like.
