Can anyone advise me ?

The links shown in G tools for one of our sites, have suddenly shot
up, from the 140 odd accumulated over the last 3 years, to over 8,000,
and is nothing to do with us.

Someone has added a site wide on 3 sites that I can find in the
downloaded G tools list.

You mean backlinks?
Ok, leave them be. No problem. They can't hurt.

Just don't count on them boosting your PR a lot or even at all, if
they are from unrelated, useless sites.

Happened to me about three years ago when someone scraped some text
out of a Wikipedia entry that just happened to contain a live link to
my site, and posted it on a couple of thousand porn sites.

No noticeable effect on traffic, and most of the links were gone after
three months or so.  Seems to be something the Google system is good
at dealing with.

we have the same problem with hundreds of porn splogs linking to us.
Google do seem pretty efficient at ignoring them so their impact on
our serps is barely noticeable in Google. I think the motive behind
them is either to generate adsense revenue from scraped content and/or
a competitor or plagarist using them to  copy the contents of your
pages - which although Google will not initially index (because its
duplicate content alogs filter them out)  there will be a day when for
example your server goes down or a coding mistake is made on your
page, which enables the plagarists copied content to get indexed in
priority to yours.
