xml.gz verses just the xml sitemap

My site host generates both the google_sitemap.xml and
google_sitemap.xml.

Does it matter which one I use or is one better than the other? I
noticed that the xml.gz is not able to be viewed or changed..

my associate has set up home page on our website as
thebestfurniture.com.au/index for natural listing purposes I wanted

this page has to be /index and I amwondering if this is so and/or

I use the Google owned Blogger as a platform for my blog "

RSS feed which is automatically generated by Blogger. This has worked
fine until now because I am getting 6 sitemap errors that say "Invalid

Creating sitemap - do these fields make a difference?

I just created a sitemap with GSiteCrawler, and one of the options is
to include the fields:

Last modification date
Change frequency
Priority

My question is, do these fields really matter to Google? Should I
include them or take them out?

We've quite a lagre site with way over 1000 pages - I did our sitemap
back in August and I think it needs updating. Is there an easy way to
do this without trawling throught the files to see which are there and
which aren't? I've recently discovered Xenu which came back with
13,274 URL's surely they don't all need mapping?

Error in parsing sitemap for Atom Feed - Invalid XML tag

Atom Feed that it use to accept. It reports "Invalid XML tag - This
