This is the error message I am getting:

Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please
ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.

However I have saved my sitemap as an html file.  What could be the
issue?

The reason why you’re getting that message is because the sitemap
needs to be an xml file & not an html file

may be helpful as well.

The issue is that the sitemap you submit to Google must be in either
plain text or xml form, not html. The ht,l sitemap is fine as an
additional page on yrou site to help your visitors.

Please go back and read the specs again in the help on how to build
and submit a sitemap in the correct format:

Isn't it true the sitemap can also be a dynamic file (i.e. PHP)? The
sitemap does not HAVE to .xml

Anyone want to weigh in on that?

Whether the extension of the file is xml or php or hjhhk it doeasn't
matter - as long as it's served with content-type set to  application/
xml  (or text/xml).
