Subject: Will sitemaps cause pages to NOT be indexed?
I currently have a site that is getting indexed pretty well without
having a sitemap.xml file. If I now add a sitemap.xml file but only
put 1/100th of my pages in the sitemap (the more important pages),
will it hurt or cause the bots to not index the other pages that are
not in the sitemap but were indexed before?

Basically will it cause pages excluded from the stiemap to not get
indexed in any way? Or, does the recursive crawling still happen the
same way and the sitemap just "makes sure" the bots get to those pages
and any links on the sitemap pages will continue to be crawled via
link following?

Thanks

No,  and a sitemap surely won't "make sure" anything gets crawled or
indexed, indexing is still based on the same old criteria of links and
content it has nothing to do with sitemaps.  Sitemaps just aid in
discovery, what they do with the information once its discovered is up
to Google.
