Does anyone have any idea whether it helps ranking at all or not,
submitting the site to the yahoo directory alone. If yes, to what
extend? I would have preferred dmoz but it is almost impossible to get
in there. My website has useful information to end users about house
painting. http://www.edpaintingonline.com

A yahoo directory link is just a link that will help a little in your
google ranking

Are there any particular directories I should consider without costing
me a fortune?

The key ones are DMOZ, Yahoo, BOTW, Skaffe, Joeant, jayde,
business.com (and maybe a couple of other I forget for now) ... then
there is a big gap in quality down to a few 1000 others.
